Backstory (About Me)

Hi, I’m Andrew. Traveling, learning languages, and entrepreneurship are my passions. Join me on my adventure around the globe and get my best tips, tricks, and techniques that you can use on your own journey…

Growing up I had the same sorts of vacations most people do. A week or two in some new and interesting place, following by the resuming of “normal life.”

I had been to both Canadian coasts by car, and even lived up in the Yukon for 1 year. That’s abut the same as going from Lisbon, Portugal, across Europe, through Turkey, and finally stopping in Tehran, Iran. So all things considered, I was very lucky.

But I’d never left the continent, nor been to a country where English wasn’t the dominant language.

In 2010, at the age of 22, that all changed.

I went to live with a friend in Calgary for a month – my first time living away from home.

From that point I was hooked.

I returned home just for long enough to plan my first overseas adventure – A trip that would take me to France, Italy, and Belgium for 3 months.

And finally, in July of 2013, the transformation was complete. I took off for good. I’ve been traveling our planet ever since.

Escape Velocity 101 (About the Blog)

On this blog you’ll find all the resources I use to travel longer, farther, cheaper, and better – as well as the techniques and mindsets I employ on the road. My hope is that you’ll use these tools on your own adventures.

Here’s where you can start:

Language Hacking

As a future polyglot, I also write about the language learning process and how we can do it better. Having studied multiple languages both in academic settings and independently, taught countless students over the last 11 years and across 3 continents, I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t, and break it down for you here.

Countries Visited: 15

Countries Lived In: (3 month minimum): 5

Cities Visited: ~75

Cities Lived in (1 month minimum): 7

Languages Learned: 3 (English, French, Russian).

Check out: Language Guides & The Polyglot Challenge – unconventional guides for speaking a new language in 3-6 months.

Entrepreneurship

To me, building a business is a perfect way to express one’s inner creative drive, one’s passion. Even though this often has financial implications, it doesn’t have to. For example, I’ve started a personal development website from which all revenues go to charity water. This also gives my travel an additional purpose!

Since money is such an important part of our lives, I also have some material that covers the making and managing of money. Money should be a source of joy and empowerment – not fear and anxiety. Mastering this tool has given me even more freedom to travel, learn languages, and build this very blog you’re reading now.
