Travel Resources

Welcome to the Escape Velocity travel resources page, a compendium of tips, tricks, guides, and hacks from this blog and many of the world’s best travel writers about how to travel better, cheaper & longer.

For a deep-dive guide to world travel please refer to my piece How To Travel the World on any Budget.

Also, I’ll be updating this list as I discover new resources. If you’ve found something missing from this list, or have written a piece yourself, please use my contact page to let me know about it.

Happy travels!

01. Weather & Climate research – Wikipedia’s “climate” section for your destination. Example.

02. Check worldwide air pollution with the tracking center.

03. To find things to do at your destination check out: WikiTravel, TripAdvisor, LonelyPlanet,Expat-Blog, BootsNAll, and Fodor’s

04. For vaccination information, be sure to check out: The Adventure Doc’s vaccination page, CDC’s Malaria Map, CDC Traveler’s Heath recommendations, World Health Organization’s Country-specific Reports.

05. Take a look at country reports for your destination. It’s worth it to check a few different government pages, not just your home country’s: Here are the relevant governmental bodies for travel in Canada, USA, Australia, Great Britain. Note that governments tend to be overly cautious, but if you see negative patterns then you can investigate further and determine if a destination will be truly dangerous or not.

Consider Joao at Nomad Revelations travel through Northern Iraq – a scary thought at first sight, until digging deeper and realizing that this area (at the time of this writing) is a stable and non-violent region of Iraq.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can be a painful and frustrating topic. Fortunately for travellers, there is one standout option, WorldNomads – that make the logistics for subscribing & renewing easy – not to mention cost effective.

  • World Nomads is what I and many other travelers use. The only travel insurance recommended by Lonely Planet.
  • Clements Worldwide also provides coverage for gear. Just be sure to read all the fine print!
  • IMGlobal is recommended by Adventurous Kate for Americans or travellers to America.

Unfortunately it’s almost impossible to come up with across the board visa advice as requirements change by nationality and travel circumstances.

For research, search “Wikipedia visa requirements for [your nationality] citizens” to find a nice page like this – or use: IATA Travel Center or VisaMapper.
